Lanikai Public Charter School

Let us all be proud of our accomplishments.  Lanikai School consistently places in the top 10% of all elementary schools state wide, as measured by the Hawaii State Assessment.  Our students not only meet or exceed academic proficiency, but engage in “real world” projects competing with success in local and state science fairs, history fairs, Lego Robotics and an Aquabotic program sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  Our Arts program continues to be recognized by the community, most notably in the “I Love Kailua” art contest.

Let us all be honored by our students, who demonstrate a compassion and connection to their community and world.  This year, student leaders organized a Thanksgiving Food Drive that collected nearly 1,000 pounds of food for a local shelter, and an event that raised $700 to purchase medical and art supplies for an orphanage in Africa.  We are proud of our students who teamed up with a local environmental agency to illustrate interpretive signs bringing awareness to the damaging effects of storm water run-off.  We honor our school community by regularly participating in local community events like beach clean ups.

Let us remember that we accomplished all the above with a deficit budget.  It is no surprise that this learning community does whatever it takes to create a dynamic learning environment.  But there was a cost because we could not sustain all program offerings while being fiscally responsible.  Difficult decisions were made.  Programs such as Hawaiian Studies and Japanese language were phased out.  Educational Assistant positions were cut in the upper grades, and other school-level positions were eliminated.  Throughout the years, we have been able to preserve our precious “Specials” positions (Art, Music, PE, Computer and Library), but even those positions are precarious year to year due to tightening of public charter school funding.

Let us all move forward together.  You can help make a substantial and real difference in the quality of education for the students of Lanikai School.
